Rybka Book
The official Rybka commercial opening book is created by Jeroen Noomen, and is in .ctg (ie. Chessbase/Fritz) format. It can only be used in the chessbase family of graphical user interfaces.
Rybka opening books for other user interfaces will also be available. For some interfaces, we will give our stamp of approval on what we think is the most appropriate public book. For other interfaces, we may create a new book.
Why can't the official Rybka commercial book be used in other user interfaces?
The major chess graphical user interfaces have chosen to go the route of incompatible book formats. As a result, in today's computer chess world, an opening book is specific to the UI. We would certainly support any initiative which leads to compatible book formats, or to the existence of tools which can convert books between different book formats.
Why don't you make an internal engine opening book?
There are two reasons:
1) A top-notch book requires the book maker to have high-quality graphical book editing tools at his disposal. Jeroen was quite clear with me on this point - an internal engine book would be of a significantly lower quality.
2) The opening book is naturally a GUI issue. For example, users like to be able to look at the contents of the book in the GUI, and see what the book author thinks of the variations, etc.
Are there plans to make an internal engine opening book?
Not at the moment. However, a considerable number of users have asked for this, so it will come under consideration for the Rybka 2 release. Please help us to make more informed decisions by taking our survey:
Why did you select the Chessbase format over the various alternatives?
Chessbase is the industry standard. In addition, Jeroen prefers their book editing tools, as do nearly all of the other top book makers who are not constrained by commercial issues.
Are there plans to make opening books for other user interfaces?
We have received a number of books and book offers for other interfaces, and will test these books to determine which of these we can recommend.
Is Jeroen going to translate his book to another user interface?
Not manually. If a tool for doing this comes into existence, we will of course use it.
What book should I use with Rybka in other user interfaces?
We will make the list of recommended Rybka opening books available in early to mid March.
For some interfaces, the choice is very easy. For example, in the Shredder interface, Sandro Necchi's book should be used.
For some other interfaces, we will need to do some testing to figure out which books can be recommended.
What book should testers use to test Rybka?
Jeroen's book is the official Rybka book, so we prefer that this be used when possible. Of course, we do not have the authority to force testers to do anything - ultimately, testers are free to do whatever they want.
